Lightweight and durable composite
At Otto Olsen, we offer a wide range of composite materials that combine low weight, high durability and minimal maintenance.
Composites provide increased operational reliability, reduced costs and more sustainable solutions. The material has a long lifespan, requires little maintenance and can be tailored to temperature, chemical or fire requirements.
With extensive experience as a technical supplier, we can assist with both standard products and customized solutions within bearings, wear surfaces, gaskets and special components.
Official supplier of Tufcot composite
Otto Olsen is also the official supplier of Tufcot composite in Norway, a renowned manufacturer with products for demanding applications in several industries.
With us as a partner, you get both technical advice and flexible deliveries – from standard components to custom-made parts.
What is composite?
The composite material consists of polyester fiber and thermosetting resin. Lubricants such as graphite, PTFE or molybdenum disulfide are often added, which are evenly distributed throughout the material.
As the material wears, new lubricant is released, ensuring consistently low friction. The material is easy to machine, weighs only about one-sixth of steel, and maintains dimensional stability even in humid conditions.
Advantages of composite
Composite materials have several advantages over other materials, including:
- Self-lubricating – minimal maintenance
- Extreme durability and long service life
- Low weight and high strength-to-weight ratio
- Low coefficient of friction (down to 0,13–0,2 against stainless steel)
- Corrosion and chemical resistant
- Low water absorption – especially T100G type (<0,1%)
- Environmentally friendly – without toxic components
- Flexible processing – delivered as plates, tubes, bars or finished parts
Material variants
Composite is available in different varieties with different properties.
-
T100 – Standard:
Lubricant-free or self-lubricating, withstands up to 100 °C. -
T100G – Graphite Reinforced:
Better friction (0,13–0,18), high strength/weight. -
T200 – High temperature:
Withstands up to 120 °C. -
T400 – Fire retardant:
Self-extinguishing, used in the mining and oil/gas sectors. -
T600 – Chemical resistant:
Bisphenol-based resin, highly resistant to acids and alkalis.
Where is composite used?
Our composite materials are used in demanding applications where traditional metal or plastic solutions are not sufficient. In the maritime sector, they are used, among other things, in rudder and pintle bearings, often in marine-grade variants approved by classification societies. Other important applications are found in transport and railways, the oil and gas industry, construction machinery, mining, as well as renewable energy such as wind and hydropower. The material is also widely used in agriculture and forestry.
